Bounteousness - A Life’s Work

There is something about autumn that makes abundance impossible to ignore. All year, so much of life is happening quietly beneath the surface—roots deepening, fruit forming, small things becoming themselves right underneath our notice. Then harvest arrives, and suddenly everything that has been growing is in full glory before us.

Bounteousness is my life’s work in the Gene Keys, and I think I feel it most clearly at this time of year. Not as excess, or accumulation, or simply having more, but as the fullness that comes from tending something well.

I keep returning to the thought that what we give our attention to grows.

Not always in the ways we expect, and certainly not always on the timeline we would choose. But love is a cultivation. So is attention. So is the willingness to return to something again and again—to a person, a piece of land, a marriage, a child, an idea, a craft—and say: you are worth tending to.

Perhaps that is what makes this photograph feel so meaningful to me. My baby sitting among the grapes from our vineyard—one abundance nestled inside another. A little life surrounded by the fruit of another kind of tending. Both the child and the harvest reminding me that so much of what is precious begins long before there is anything impressive to show for it.

We live in a culture that often celebrates the harvest while overlooking the tending. We admire what has bloomed without seeing the thousands of small acts that allowed it to bloom. But a beautiful life is rarely made in one sweeping gesture. It is made in attention given over time.

Maybe bounteousness is less about receiving everything we want and more about becoming someone who knows how to nourish what has been placed in our care. To notice what is already growing and give ourselves fully to it. To trust that love offered generously is never lost.

And then, may we celebrate when the season comes when the abundance is so visible that we cannot help but stand in awe of it.

The vines are heavy. The table is full. The baby is gorging himself joyously in a sea of grapes. And for a moment we are allowed to see what love has been growing all along.
